Cecilia Moisio Company, led by Finnish choreographer and director Cecilia Moisio, is a dynamic force in contemporary dance theatre. With over 30 acclaimed works performed in 16 countries worldwide, Moisio’s multidisciplinary approach blends theatre, dance, and performance art. Her productions delve into the psychology of human behavior, challenging societal norms with raw emotion and humor. As a psychological activist, Moisio confronts audiences with unspoken taboos, skillfully deconstructing social facades to reveal deeper truths. Based in in Rotterdam, the company crafts original productions while also engaging in collaborations with esteemed companies in the professional field such as Maas Theater en Dans, Club Guy & Roni and Scapino Ballet Rotterdam.

About Cecilia Moisio

The Finnish Cecilia Moisio (1978) is a choreographer, director and performer based in the Netherlands since 1997. In 2019 she won The Dutch Dance Days Young Audience Award. In 2014 she won the same prize in the category for adult audiences as an upcoming choreographer. Previously she has also been nominated for the BNG Theater maker prize in 2011 and twice for the VSCD dance prize- ‘the swan’ for best dancer of the year. Cecilia danced for many years with Dansgroep Krisztina de Châtel and later with WArd/waRD – Ann Van den Broek becoming one of the most eclectic dancers of the Dutch dance scene. 

Her over 30 works have been performed more than 16 countries worldwide. Her dance movie SHE/HER has won awards at the Chicago Feminist Film Festival, the Dance Film Festival in  Budapest and Stories We Dance festival in Genoa, Italy. Since 2016 she produces her work under her own foundation ‘Stichting Cecilia Moisio’. In 2019 she started to create work for young audiences as well. In 2021 she became one of the core artists at Maas theater en dans – the main youth theatre company in the Netherlands.  

Cecilia’s inspiration comes from the psychology of humans and the unconscious behavioural patterns that arise from social norms and expectations imposed upon us. She calls herself a ‘Psychological Activist’ and is always looking for the truth behind our motives, emotions and behaviour. She wants to confront the audience with unspoken taboos. In her performances, she shows how carefully constructed social facades are slowly decomposed and uncovered. 

Her work is multidisciplinary; in between theatre, dance and performance art. Her performances have a dynamic character, filled with raw emotion on the one hand, and a clean, controlled choreography on the other. Humor is her vice, she loves to provoke emotion. She combines a strong visual style in video, décor and costumes with witty content and a layered sound composition to dig deep into her audience mind.

Cecilia Moisio Company, onder leiding van de Finse choreografe en regisseur Cecilia Moisio, is een dynamische kracht in het hedendaagse danstheater. Met meer dan 30 veelgeprezen werken uitgevoerd in 16 landen over de hele wereld, combineert Moisio’s multidisciplinaire aanpak theater, dans en performancekunst. Haar producties verdiepen zich in de psychologie van menselijk gedrag en stellen maatschappelijke normen ter discussie met rauwe emotie en humor. Als psychologisch activist confronteert Moisio het publiek met onuitgesproken taboes, waarbij zij vakkundig sociale façades deconstrueert om diepere waarheden te onthullen. Over Cecilia Moisio

De Finse choreograaf, regisseur en performer Cecilia Moisio (1978) woont en werkt sinds 1997 in Nederland. In 2014 won ze als aanstormend choreograaf de Prijs van de Nederlandse Dansdagen in de categorie voor volwassen publiek en in 2019 won ze dezelfde prijs voor Jong Publiek. Ze is daarmee de enige maker die tot nu toe beide prijzen in ontvangst heeft mogen nemen. Eerder werd Cecilia ook genomineerd voor de BNG Bank Theaterprijs en twee keer voor de VSCD dansprijs ‘de Zwaan’ voor beste danseres van het jaar. Cecilia danste jarenlang bij Dansgroep Krisztina de Châtel en later bij WArd/waRD van Ann Van den Broek. Momenteel is haar performer Gwen Langenberg genomineerd voor ‘de Jonge Zwaan’ voor haar rol in Pinocchio Effect, de voorstelling die Cecilia in 2023 maakte in opdracht van Scapino Ballet Rotterdam en Maas theater en dans.

Haar ruim dertig werken zijn wereldwijd in meer dan zestien landen uitgevoerd. Haar dansfilm SHE/HER won prijzen op het Chicago Feminist Film Festival, het Dance Film Festival in Boedapest en het Stories We Dance Festival in Genua, Italië. En sinds 2018 maakt ze, naast werk voor volwassenen, ook voorstellingen voor een jong publiek. In 2021 werd ze een van de vaste makers bij Maas theater en dans, het grootste jeugdtheatergezelschap van Nederland. Sinds 2016 is zij artistieke leider van haar eigen groep, Cecilia Moisio Company.

Cecilia Moisio’s werk kenmerkt zich door een unieke combinatie van theater, dans, zang en performancekunst. Haar voorstellingen zijn dynamisch en emotioneel geladen, vol rauwe energie, maar tegelijkertijd nauwkeurig gechoreografeerd, met humor als een prominente ondertoon. Cecilia bekritiseert de absurditeiten van onze samenleving op een confronterende en soms verontrustende manier, waarbij ze hoge eisen stelt aan haar performers. Haar werk is visueel krachtig en filmisch, met decors, video en belichting die in dialoog staan met kostuums, teksten en gelaagde geluidscomposities. Deze elementen creëren een wereld die diep doordringt in de geest van het publiek en hen uitdaagt om nieuwe perspectieven te voelen en te begrijpen.
